News Reporters

Job Summary:
The News Reporter will interpret and communicate news and public affairs in an in-depth and insightful manner. The role is crucial in connecting the audience with key newsmakers, enhancing the credibility of the station, and expanding its viewership base.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take instructions from the Head of News Gathering and News Producers on assigned stories.
  • Ensure the availability and working condition of all required equipment.
  • Assess locations to determine needed pictures and sound bites; direct or capture images as necessary.
  • Analyze and broadcast news received from various sources.
  • Present news on-air clearly, concisely, and eloquently.
  • Ensure professional conduct, avoiding actions that could harm the organization’s reputation.
  • Telecast live bulletins and conduct interviews remotely.
  • Review material, take time codes, write scripts to accompany images, and ensure editing accuracy.
  • Investigate breaking news developments, including unique events, disasters, crimes, or human interest stories.
  • Research and analyze background information for accurate reporting.
  • Gather in-depth information through research, interviews, and reliable news sources.
  • Report on specialized topics such as politics, science, medicine, technology, business, sports, arts, education, and more.
  • Develop feature ideas or commentaries by analyzing news, issues, or personal experiences.
  • Submit daily updates (Text, photos, or Rich media) to the Online Editor for Digital/Mobile first goals.
  • Follow News.co.ug Editorial and social media policies when posting on company or personal digital assets.
  • Handle viewers’ feedback, complaints, and reactions, taking appropriate actions.
  • Undertake additional projects assigned by the Head of News.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Academic: University degree in Mass Communication or Certificate/Diploma in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Professional: Certificate/Diploma in Journalism.
  • Experience: At least 0-1 years in the media industry, with proven skills in conceptualizing, editing, and producing television stories.
  • Strong command of British English.
  • Passion for writing and keen news sense.
  • In-depth knowledge of local, regional, and/or specialized topics.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Computer literate with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills.
  • Ability to manage digital media production workflow systems effectively.
