Leuven, Belgium | August 16, 2025 – The historic city of Leuven, just outside Brussels, came alive as it hosted the prestigious Meeting Voor Mon athletics event, where four talented Ugandan athletes proudly carried their nation’s flag on the global stage. The competition turned out to be a triumphant outing for Team Uganda, filled with record-breaking performances and national pride.

Uganda’s sprinting star Leni Shida stole the spotlight by smashing the national record in the 300 meters. Usually competing in the 400m, Shida displayed her versatility and explosive pace, captivating fans and reinforcing her reputation as one of Uganda’s most dynamic runners.

In the men’s 800 meters, Tom Dradriga powered his way to victory, crossing the line first in a commanding display of middle-distance running. His win highlighted not only his exceptional talent but also his growing potential on the international scene.

Also representing Uganda were Tony Omara in the 1500 meters and Knight Aciru, both of whom ran with grit and determination, adding to the team’s strong presence and spirit at the event.

The athletes received unwavering support from Ambassador Mirjam Blaak Sow, Uganda’s envoy to Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the EU, who led a delegation of enthusiastic fans. In her remarks, Ambassador Blaak commended the runners for their dedication and excellence, while pledging continued government backing for sports development. She further rewarded the athletes as a gesture of appreciation and motivation.

“Our athletes have shown the true spirit of Uganda through their resilience and achievements,” Ambassador Blaak said, praising their inspiring performances.

Behind the scenes, the Embassy of Uganda in Brussels played a pivotal role in making the participation possible, assisting the athletes with visas and logistical support to compete in Europe. Their efforts underscored Uganda’s commitment to promoting sports diplomacy and nurturing talent.

As Uganda celebrates the achievements of Shida, Dradriga, Omara, and Aciru in Leuven, the spotlight now turns to their future endeavors, with hopes that their success will inspire a new generation of Ugandan athletes to reach even greater heights.
