On Wednesday, November 29, Safina Namukwaya gave birth to two healthy twins, a boy and a girl, via cesarean section.

According to a Facebook post by the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, she became pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF is an infertility treatment, which is the inability of a woman to conceive.

An egg is extracted from a woman’s ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a lab as part of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. After fertilization, the resultant embryo is placed inside a woman’s womb to continue growing and developing.

When she gave birth at 34 weeks, her twins weighed 2 kg.

The hospital declared, “As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we’ve accomplished the extraordinary: delivering twins to Africa’s oldest mother, 70 years old.”

“This story is about the resiliency and strength of the human spirit, not just about medical success.”

Given that Namukwaya gave birth to a baby girl in 2020, this is her second delivery in three years.

According to reports, she had desired children after being made fun of for not having any.

“I raised other people’s kids and watched them grow up and go out on their own. She was cited in the media as saying, “I wondered who would take care of me when I grow old.”

It’s unclear if she utilized an egg from a donor or one that she had frozen and kept as a child.

Menopause often strikes women between the ages of 45 and 55. Around this time, fertility declines, but thanks to medical advancements, they can now become mothers.
