Copriyam Kasolo, the perpetrator of the kidnapping and deaths of social worker Maria Nagirinya and her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa, was given a life sentence by the High Court of Kampala.
The same court also gave Johnson Lubega, aka Manomano, his fellow mastermind, a life sentence for the crime.
“Aside from the need for financial gain, there are no definitive answers for why they committed the crimes. The murder was horrific and horrible, and no amount of punishment can make up for the lives of the victims, but it is necessary to stop others from committing crimes of a similar nature. The two showed no regret at all during the trial. Deterrence is required, according to Justice Isaac Muwata, in order to deter future offenders from committing similar crimes against members of the public.
According to the judge, a life sentence is severe enough to protect society from the two convicted criminals’ crimes.
They were given life sentences for each count of kidnapping, killing, and aggravated robbery, but they were told the sentences would run concurrently.
Additionally, the judge gave 30-year prison terms to Sharif Mpanga, Hassan Kisekka alias Masadda, and Nassif Kalyango alias Muwonge.
The three defendants displayed sorrow throughout the trial, according to Justice Muwata, and there was no evidence presented to indicate that they took an active role in committing the crimes.
“We must give them an opportunity to change. Every offender has a 14-day window in which to file an appeal in the Court of Appeal against their conviction or sentence, according to Justice Muwata.
