Police have apprehended a man suspected of shooting and injuring a 12-year-old boy during a New Year’s Eve incident.
Edrine Babalanda was riding in a taxi driven by Robert Nsubuga when the shooting occurred around 9:25 pm on December 31, 2024.
The alleged shooter, driving a black Toyota Harrier with registration number UBQ 699B, reportedly opened fire, claiming he was attempting to ward off thieves who had tried to rob him.
Tragically, a stray bullet struck young Edrine, who was seated in the taxi’s back seat. Realizing he had injured someone, the shooter fled the scene.
The boy’s father, Moses Babalanda, rushed him to a nearby clinic for immediate medical attention. Edrine was later transferred to Mulago Hospital for further treatment.
Police have since identified and arrested the suspect, Mohammed Kitaka, the Toyota Harrier’s driver. He has been charged with attempted murder as authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
“The safety and security of all citizens is our top priority,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring justice is served.
