Police have unveiled a comprehensive traffic management plan ahead of the presidential nominations scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Lubowa, Wakiso District.
Developed in coordination with the commission’s guidelines, the plan seeks to ease congestion and maintain public safety on major routes leading to the venue. Authorities emphasized that only accredited vehicles and personnel will be granted entry.
Each presidential aspirant will be allowed a maximum of two vehicles, carrying no more than 10 occupants each, including the candidate. Entry will be restricted to vehicles displaying official police-issued stickers.
“Any vehicles without the designated stickers will be stopped at checkpoints,” the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety announced.
Traffic diversions will be enforced along Entebbe Road. Vehicles traveling from Entebbe to Kampala will be redirected at Namboole, Najjanankumbi, and other junctions, while those moving from Kampala toward Entebbe will be diverted at Kajjansi and Seguku. Police noted that all diversion points will be clearly signposted and managed by traffic officers.
Parking at the nomination grounds will be strictly limited to accredited vehicles. Authorities further banned processions, rallies, and large mobilizations of supporters along public roads during the two-day exercise, as well as motorcycle (“boda-boda”) convoys escorting candidates.
Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said the measures are intended to ensure order and safety. He urged candidates and their teams to comply:
“These guidelines are designed to guarantee security and smooth operations. We call upon all parties to observe them so the nomination process is conducted peacefully,” he stated.
The traffic plan will take effect at 5 a.m. on Tuesday and remain in place until the close of nominations on Wednesday.
Uganda’s 2026 presidential nominations are expected to attract significant attention, with incumbent President Yoweri Museveni and several opposition contenders set to participate.
