The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) was a major highlight at the 11th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 9th African Engineering Conference, held from September 15–18, 2025, at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The event, organized by the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE), brought together policymakers, engineers, innovators, and industry leaders under the theme: “Engineering for Sustainable Development in Africa: Addressing Climate Change and Building Resilient Infrastructure.”
Among the key dignitaries was Rt. Hon. Anita Among, Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, along with leaders from Kenya and the East African Legislative Assembly.

UICT student innovators, Frank Muhindo and Lillian Lwanja, earned recognition by winning the 2nd Runner-Up Award for their project, the Temperature and Dust Monitoring System (TDMS) an AI-powered Internet of Things solution designed to protect coffee quality in storage warehouses. By tracking temperature, humidity, and dust, the system ensures Uganda’s coffee maintains its world-class standard from storage through to the market.
During the week, UICT lecturer Anthony Kimbugwe showcased the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AVR) technology in education, highlighting how immersive tools are transforming learning. The institute also received a Bronze Award for its outstanding contribution to ICT skills development and innovation.
In his message, President Museveni stressed the urgent need for Africa to embrace science and technology as engines of industrial transformation, identifying energy and transport as priority sectors. He noted that innovation has always been central to human progress and poverty reduction.
Speaker Anita Among praised UICT for its dedication to expanding ICT training and reaffirmed Parliament’s support in strengthening the institute’s capacity. She commended its role in nurturing a new generation of innovators who are shaping Uganda’s future.
