The Electoral Commission (EC) has rescheduled the national voters’ register update in preparation for the 2025/2026 general elections.
Initially set for January 3 to January 24, 2025, the exercise will now take place from January 20 to February 10, 2025. EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama explained that the adjustment is to ensure thorough logistical and administrative readiness for a seamless and inclusive process.
“This rescheduling allows us to prepare adequately and provide every eligible citizen the opportunity to participate,” Justice Byabakama stated.
The update will occur daily, including weekends, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at designated stations nationwide. It will register Ugandans aged 18 and above who are not yet on the voters’ register. Registered voters can also transfer polling stations, verify details, and update their information.
Justice Byabakama urged young voters, particularly students, to utilize this opportunity before the new school term begins.
“This is a chance for students who have reached voting age to ensure they are included in the electoral process,” he emphasized.
The EC encouraged all stakeholders—political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens—to actively participate, ensuring the process is orderly and transparent.
“This exercise relies on collective efforts. Cooperation and adherence to guidelines will be key to its success,” Justice Byabakama noted.
The update aligns with the EC’s constitutional mandate under Article 61 (1)(e) of the Constitution and the Electoral Commission Act (Cap 140) to maintain a comprehensive voters’ register.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to a credible and inclusive electoral process and urged the public to access detailed information through its official channels.
