Two G4S security guards are being investigated for allegedly conspiring to steal over UGX 1 billion during a cash transit operation in Kampala.

The incident, which occurred on November 19, 2024, involved the guards diverting a bullion van, registration number UAJ 199T, while it was transferring funds from Lubowa to Nakasero. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned in Nabunya, Rubaga Division, with two rifles left behind.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, “The stolen cash amounted to One Billion, Sixty-Nine Million, Four Hundred and Twenty Thousand Ugandan Shillings (UGX 1,069,420,000) and USD 14,474.”

Police quickly launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of Otim Ambrose Richard in Kwania District. He was found with UGX 117 million, believed to be part of the stolen money.

“Investigations are ongoing, and more information will be provided as it becomes available,” ASP Owoyesigyire stated. “We are determined to recover the remaining funds and hold all those responsible accountable.”

The search for other suspects and the remaining stolen money continues as police ramp up their efforts to resolve the case.
