General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces and First Son, has announced that the Anti-Homosexuality Act, enacted in 2023, will be repealed in 2026.

This controversial law criminalizes homosexuality and its promotion within Uganda.

In a social media post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Muhoozi stated, “In 2026, we shall remove this Anti-Homosexuality Act. They are sick people, but since the Creator made them… what do we do? Even kiboko might not work. We shall pray for them.”

However, Muhoozi later clarified that his social media posts should not be taken as official declarations. “Tweets are modern musings, reflections, and abstractions. No one should consider them official unless accompanied by my signature or thumbprint,” he said.

The Anti-Homosexuality Act, signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni in May 2023, has faced widespread criticism, particularly from Western nations and the LGBTQ+ community. Critics argue that the law is unjust and discriminatory.

Although the Constitutional Court upheld parts of the law, it nullified provisions that obstructed access to health services and criminalized property owners.

Other clauses prohibiting recruitment, exhibitionism, and the promotion of homosexuality remain intact.

Muhoozi’s statement has sparked discussions about the future of LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda, with observers questioning whether his remarks will lead to meaningful changes.
