Dr. Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, has dismissed the idea of imposing another lockdown, even if the new Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) spreading in China reaches Uganda.
In an interview with NBS Television, Dr. Atwine assured Ugandans that the Ministry has developed resilient response systems since the COVID-19 pandemic, making drastic measures like nationwide lockdowns unnecessary.
“We are confident in our ability to manage this situation without needing lockdowns. Our surveillance and healthcare systems are stronger and more responsive than ever,” Dr. Atwine said.
As China faces a surge in HMPV cases, Uganda is focusing on early detection and management. The Ministry has enhanced border health services and urged the public to follow preventive measures, such as frequent hand washing and wearing masks in crowded areas.
Dr. Atwine’s comments come amidst growing concern fueled by alarming footage of overcrowded hospitals in China circulating on social media. However, the Ministry has called for calm, emphasizing Uganda’s readiness to handle any health threats.
The Ministry has also issued travel advisories, urging those with weakened immune systems to delay travel to high-risk areas. Dr. Atwine remains optimistic, encouraging the public to trust in the country’s preparedness without fear of extreme restrictions.
