Teachers at Kampala Parents School, located in Naguru, have protested their low salary at the primary school.
The school, owned by tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia, Uganda’s wealthiest individual, is part of his larger business empire, which includes education.
A video posted on social media shows teachers voicing their dissatisfaction, with one asking, “How can you work in a shop where you can’t eat anything?”
Teachers have also stated that they are being confined inside to prevent them from speaking out.
The teachers claim that there is salary discrimination, with Indian personnel given preferential treatment. They said that a gatekeeper can earn up to Shs 3 million, while teachers only receive a net compensation of Shs600,000/=.
Some teachers reported that they are paid as little as Shs200,000 per month. They further claimed that Indian employees are paid in dollars, whereas teachers are underfed, with their lunches remaining unchanged.
Sudhir bought the school in 2004 through his Ruparelia Group, which later upgraded its facilities and improved its reputation for academic excellence.
Some teachers said that foreign employees, particularly Indian nationals, are favored in terms of pay.
Kampala Parents School is well-known for its great academic performance and high tuition, attracting students from wealthy families around the country.
Attempts to contact the school’s management, including Sudhir’s son Rajiv Ruparelia, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as new information becomes available.
