Kivumbi Urges NUP to Drop Absent MPs Before 2026 Elections

The Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has called on party leader Robert Kyagulanyi to rethink his support for members who routinely miss party activities and meetings.

Kivumbi’s remarks were made during a training workshop held Tuesday for NUP representatives from the Buganda region, part of the party’s preparations for the 2026 general elections. A number of NUP-affiliated MPs were notably absent from the session.

Among those missing were Kimanya-Kabonera’s Abed Bwanika, Kawempe South’s Bashir Kaziibwe Mbaziira, and Mathias Mpuuga of Nyendo-Mukungwe. Also absent were Jimmy Lwanga (Njeru Municipality) and Dr. Twaha Kagabo (Bukoto South), both of whom have recently shown support for the Patriotic League of Uganda.

Kivumbi proposed that Kyagulanyi issue a 30-day ultimatum to these MPs, demanding they justify their absence or offer a public apology. Should they fail to respond, he suggested the party withdraw its backing for their re-election bids in 2026.

“I request that our president begin identifying potential new candidates for these constituencies. If they don’t respond within a month, we should move on without them,” Kivumbi stated.

He further insisted on taking a clear stance against any members expressing support for President Museveni or his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

“We cannot afford to continue under Museveni’s rule. How can those we supported in Parliament now turn around to back Museveni or, even worse, Muhoozi?” he asked.

The training session focused on preparing party members to address key national issues ahead of the upcoming elections.

Attempts by Nile Post to get responses from MPs Mpuuga and Bwanika about their status in the party were unsuccessful.
