The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has instructed the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to provide a detailed statement on the arrest of four-time presidential candidate, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, in Nairobi, Kenya.

This comes after Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda condemned what he called the unlawful nature of Besigye’s arrest. Ssemujju argued that both Kenyan and Ugandan laws were not adhered to before Besigye’s extradition.

“The arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye was a wrongful abduction, and we must condemn it,” Ssemujju said. He also called on the Kenyan government to clarify whether they still uphold the East African Community protocols.

However, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua warned against rushing to condemn Kenya’s actions, noting that the matter is already before the court, and Parliament should wait for a ruling.

In response, Speaker Anita Among stressed the importance of transparency and accountability, stating, “I have directed the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to provide a comprehensive statement on Dr. Kizza Besigye’s arrest, without delving into the specifics of the case.”
